The Elephant at war

Being a major transport hub with a large civilian population, the Elephant and Castle was bombed heavily during World War Two.

The worst raid to hit the area took place on the 10th May 1941, when bombers deliberately targeted the south London district in order to create a ferocious firestorm which rapidly engulfed the Elephant.

After the war much of the Elephant lay in ruins, a shadow of its pre-war days when Londoners had flocked there to indulge in its many shops and places of entertainment.

A History of the Elephant & Castle (Part One)

Some wonderful insights into South London.

A south London landmark… the Elephant and Castle statue

As well as being one of London’s major transport hubs, the Elephant and Castle (or, more simply, the ‘Elephantas locals like to call it) is one of the capital’s more peculiarly named areas.

A typical Elephant and Castle scene

Thanks to its post-war jumble of tower blocks, roaring traffic and gloomy pedestrian subways, Elephant and Castle has become rather unloved over the years… which, when you consider the area’s long and fascinating history, is a sentiment nothing short of travesty.

*

Before the Elephant

Before acquiring its unique name, the land which would eventually become the Elephant and Castle was occupied by a village known as Newington which came under Walworth; a manor listed in the 1086 Domesday Book as being part of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s portfolio.

Today, the name of the early settlement lives on…

Speak Now, There Is No Later!

She was on her own, at least for me that is how I saw her. Silent and still. In the midst of the company.

Swirling around her like moths to a light, full of show, speaking verbal trite.

My mind wasn’t pure, nor was it sacred, or true. But, yes! Love was there. It was in full view.

But I never spoke. I never dared in case she mocked and made a joke.

I stood for a while simply gazing on. Not daring to avert my gaze in this silence in case she was gone.

My heart was heavy in my hand to hold, I must seize this moment before we both grew old.

We danced that night but never spoke the words that would ignite lovers playing at being one.

No, oh no! Not us. That was to wait for a chance before it had begun.

But chances come, and chances go. One must take them as they flow, past in a rush, never slowing, never too slow.

Never stop at a touch so close it could crush your very soul, your very being, your very sight, your very seeing.

Speak the name of love, before love is fleeing.

Variety is the Spice of Life by Sally Cronin

A review of– Variety Is The Spice Of Life by my good friend Sally Cronin. Well worth the read.

Claire Fullerton's avatarClaire Fullerton Author

I have long been a fan of Sally Cronin’s writing, so it was with great enthusiasm that I read her November 2022 release, Variety is the Spice of Life, whose title is delightfully appropriate for the assembly of poetry and prose that covers a range of topics.

In Ms. Cronin’s author introduction, she states the essence of her book’s intention, “In this latest collection of poetry and short stories I have attempted to capture the beauty and raw power of nature, and the resilience of humans as they face a modern world of change and disruption.” The author does that and more, and the entirety of this book is a breath of fresh air replete with creative nuance.

The book begins with a series of soul-stirring poems—each short, pithy, and inspirational enough to serve as its own existential meditation. In Expeditions we are encouraged to “ignore those who say…

Maybe

Maybe!

It’s maybe in the shadows when life is at its darkest.
Maybe it hides in the mind when you’re feeling insecure.
It’s maybe only there when you’re at your lowest.
Maybe that’s when love will find you and offer a cure.

Am I Worthwhile

Am I Worthwhile?

Don’t laugh, don’t laugh, please don’t laugh at me
When your laugh is fuelled by my anxiety.
Why do you torment me when you can’t explain
What it is I have to deal with, with my invisible pain.

Depression is always there, it hoovers over my head
When it hits me I feel I’d be better off if I was dead.
It’s hard to understand how punishing those thoughts can become
And when eventually it leaves me, I’m left feeling completely numb.

I lay in bed. I don’t want to move.
But I don’t want you looking at me as though you disapprove.
You be me, and I’ll be you,
Then tell me exactly what you would do?

Please don’t laugh, don’t laugh, don’t laugh at me,
I’m not looking for any of your sympathy.
I don’t know why but I’m different and at times I feel damaged,
I wish I had a simple wound that you could bandage.

I want you to cradle my face in your palm
Then kiss me gently and shelter me from harm.
I want you to give me peace, I want you to make me smile.
I want you to make me whole. I want you to make me worthwhile.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Music Column – The Big Band Era with William Price King and Sally Cronin 1930s – Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson and The Charleston

Does anyone fancy a dance?

Smorgasbord - Variety is the Spice of Life.'s avatarSmorgasbord Blog Magazine

Welcome to the new series of the music column where I am joined as always by Jazz singer and composer William Price King.  We hope you will join us every Tuesday for some of the chart hits of the big band era from the 1930s through to the 1950s.

Some of the earlier videos are not of the best quality however where possible we have sourced remastered copies to share with you. Considering some are almost 100 years old, it is remarkable that they exist at all.  A testament to the love of the music of that era. Along with our selections each week we will also be showcasing one of the dance crazes from the 1920s onwards and as with the music videos some are not of the highest quality and in some cases I have substituted more modern versions.

Here is my next selection from the Big Band…

Kate Rhodes: The Locked-Island Mysteries

What a fine review!

Auntie M Writes Crime's avatarAuntiemwrites Crime-Mystery Author M K Graff

Kate Rhodes has been a favorite author of Auntie M’s, starting with her compelling Alice Quentin series. Now that’s she’s branched out to her Locked-Island Mysteries, set in the Scilly Isles, Auntie M caught up with the series that features local detective DI Ben Kitto, with the 5th and 6th in this compelling series.

Devil’s Table centers on the island of St. Martin’s, where young Jade and her twin brother, Ethan, are attacked after leaving their shared bedroom at night. Ethan escapes but Jade is nowhere to be seen, and an island-wide search starts with residents and police battling the incessant fog that permeates the island.

Then a body is found in a dramatic, posed fashion, and Ben and his small team scramble to redouble their efforts to find the missing girl, while at the same time searching for a killer amidst the seemingly innocent narcissi harvest. The juxtaposition between…
